The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
