Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
